The absolute giveaway that MacIntyre is from Oban is the way he says ‘ou’ or ‘ow’. It’s a hyper-localised inflection that I’ve simply not heard anywhere else. I’d love to know why folk from Oban came to develop it.

There are just three hills now in Scotland holding any snow. One of them is Ben Nevis, whose last small relic on the north-east face was visited yesterday by Chris_Speight. It’ll be gone by this time next week, which is the earliest I’ve ever known the Ben to be snow-free.

Five years ago today we aborted a summit camp above Loch Etive due to sub-optimal weather. Happily, Olive and Mabel took it in their stride.

My latest book The First Kid in Space is perfect holiday reading for anyone 9+. Think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets The Traitors. In space. With a tech bro villain. (Yes, really.) (And any RTs gratefully received!!!)

Walked across the River Ness on the way to dinner tonight. It’s a very impressive stretch of water, despite being only a few miles long. By volume it’s the third largest river in Britain, discharging 90,000 litres a *second*. Only the Tay and Severn discharge more.

Mesmerising. A scene from Ken Loach’s ‘Kes’ from 1969. No matter the subject, when someone talks with enthusiasm and passion about something they love, it commands complete attention.

As usual, I did the magnificent Lakeland 50 event over the weekend. A non-stop, 19-hour walk with injured veteran (ex-services) friends through some of England’s prettiest scenery. A truly wonderful event with inspiring people.

So there are now just two patches of snow left in Scotland: Sphinx and Pinnacles at Braeriach. Fittingly, Stephen Fleming’s trusty dog, Kyle, stood Sphinx-like on the ridge above the snow today.

Yesterday’s trip to Aonach Beag sought to see if there was any snow left at the usual place. Looks like I just missed it… The grey hollow is where it usually sits. It’s grey because the growing season is so short, virtually nothing can grow beneath where the snow usually sits.

This morning’s weather seems a world away from Saturday’s lovely, warm conditions. Steall* waterfall looked gorgeous amid sun-bathed rocks and trees. (* Pronounced ‘stYAHL’, not ‘steel’)

Three more from yesterday’s trip to Garbh Choire Mòr by Joe Glennie. The last tiny piece melted at 2.30pm. August 6th is the earliest all snow has vanished in Scotland, beating 2003 by over two weeks. Four consecutive years of disappearance for a patch once thought permanent.
