80 years ago today, in 1944, German E-boats tore into an Anglo-American fleet heading for Slapton Sands in Devon. The allied units were engaged on Exercise Tiger, training for D-day. Around 750 men were killed.

Today in 1946 the first FA cup after the war saw Jackie Stamps, wounded at Dunkirk and told he would never play football again, smash the ball so hard that it burst. He scored twice in extra time to win the cup for Derby.

Today in 1770 a vast gilded equestrian statue of George III as a Roman emperor was dedicated in Lower Manhattan. A large crowd cheered and drank. Salutes blasted out.
