Super excited that Ilenne's (Ilenne Del Valle) study using synthetic microbes in synthetic soils is up in BioRxiv (doi.org/10.1101/2022.0…). She finds that some soil properties have additive effects on cell signal bioavailability, while others have emergent properties!
"To better understand the compatibility of indicator gas reporting with environmental samples, we evaluated how matrix hydration affects the gas signal of an engineered microbe added to a sieved soil." By Silberg & colleagues Rice University University of York pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.10…

Delighted to share our latest paper on the RENDR platform — an engineered ribozyme that can convert RNA signals into orthogonal protein outputs. Published in Nature Communications and led by Lauren Gambill, PhD, August Staubus, Kim Wai Mo, and @andrea_faint. Supported by U.S. National Science Foundation nature.com/articles/s4146…
So happy to share my first ever paper with the world, in which we looked at relationships between microbial sensor proteins and environmental conditions in the deep subsurface! Thank you so much to Emm, Joff Silberg Carrie Masiello and @ProfMaggie for all their ideas and support 😁
I went to Wynwood Art Walk and couldn’t resist painting a SSPB Rice University graffiti. Also a gas biosensor (on the right) too!
A big congrats to the students in the Chappell Lab, Joff Silberg, and Lauren Stadler labs for showing how to record info about DNA uptake in an undomesticated microbial community using a new form of synthetic memory doi.org/10.1101/2023.0…
Please RT: Interested in contributing to a roadmap for the field of living systems as sensors and actuators? On Aug 25-26, there will be a virtual workshop on this topic (2023synbioworkshop.rice.edu). To register, please fill out the following survey (2023synbioworkshop.rice.edu/survey/).
