Francis J. Burdon Good call Fank. The middle of the H. copis frontoclyleus has, in this instance, an isolated ‘smudge’ - it is usually expressed as an inverted triangle that may or may not join at the suture. The mid-frontoclyleus of H. umbripennis is always free of pigmentation :-)

Pffft, Edward Scissorhands wasn't the only character with a formidable set of clippers. Check out the pincers on Hydrobiosis clavigera, a predatory caddisfly from Aotearoa/New Zealand!

Ecnomina zealandica, an enigmatic endemic ecnomid from 'N Zed'. This seldom-seen, small net-spinning caddisfly is a real oddity within the New Zealand fauna.

I love how the artist has incorporated a stonefly exuvia in their work and changed it from ‘under the bridge’ graffiti to a mixed media piece.

Two beautiful, if not somewhat cryptic, endemic stonefly species from Aotearoa/New Zealand spied on a recent collecting trip. Zelandoperla agnetis (L), Zelandoperla fenestrata (R),

Still plenty of new aquatic species to be found in Aotearoa/New Zealand! Just gotta look in the right places. New Tiphobiosis caddisfly collected last year, confirmed by 🧬, & new trip last week to collect males & larvae. Photos of larval habitat & pupae collected to rear.

Update to my previous post rearing Tiphobiosis caddisfly pupae collected 2-weeks ago - 1 hatched! Photos incl. pharate adult (mature but not emerged), the empty pupal case with larval sclerites at one end, & adult male. Need to confirm if it's the new species we found last year🤞

Tiphobiosis female caddisfly (5 mm) reared from pupa collected 2 wks ago. Can't be id'd to species, but we can exclude a number of known species based on locality, altitude and the -/+ of a ventral abdominal spine or we could just simply barcode it... Checkout the cool oviscapt!
