Thanks for joining the #RASJACS journal club discussion on resident burnout detection by domestic partners and program directors! Let's start with a quick poll... Does your residency program have an effective mechanism to identify burnout?

We're on our best behavior at work - if you can believe it 😁- our spouses/gf/bf/partners see the "real" us 😒 What if programs asked THEM how we're doing?? Novel way to intercept physician burnout perhaps? ❤️@DissanaikeMD Adam B. Hill, M.D. Melissa Red Hoffman, MD, ND, FACS Michael Villarreal

RAS-ACS Andrew Esposito Peter Yoo Nathan Coppersmith Erin White, MD Jonathan Vacek Brett Tracy, MD Michael Carr I’m surprised the domestic partner sensitivity isn’t higher and I wonder if part of it is that residents who are overworked are more likely to be burned out and are probably less likely to want to spend the few hours they are home talking about feeling burned out

RAS-ACS Andrew Esposito Peter Yoo Nathan Coppersmith Erin White, MD Jonathan Vacek Brett Tracy, MD Michael Carr I feel like sometimes there may also be a misconception that burnout = weakness and that makes residents feel uncomfortable talking about it at work, where as surgeons, they are supposed to be strong and confident

And I would have to say "no". There are boundaries in a relationship that are precious. Unless I am in danger, I would feel threatened by a third party checking in. It's a setup for loss of trust all around. Jobs are temporary, families are forever.

I’m so excited I had the opportunity to share our health outcomes research on our rural acute abdomen patients. I wanted to thank my co-authors (Sara Scarlet MD, MPH Shruthi Srinivas, MD, MPH Sienna Wong & Alex Helkin) for turning this into a reality. 🙂 #APHA2022
