Just seen the (delayed) press night of Benjamin Scheuerโs extraordinarily poignant and personal autobiographical solo musical THE LION, performed for the first time not by himself but the strikingly different but also wonderful Max Alexander-Taylor. Pics: Pamella Raith Pamela Raith
I saw Benjamin Scheuer perform THE LION in London multiple times in 2014, then in New York and in New Haven. Obviously it was HIS story, so it was devastating; but Max Alexander-Taylor has a warm, gentle grace that makes you hear the songs anew (not least because heโs English-accented)
But this production also captures the changing moods of the show with effortless shifts of register, as Max Alexander-Taylor daringly connects eye to eye with audience members, and swaps guitars for different sounds.
THE LION is a simply gorgeous piece of writing and sublime theatre making. I called its 2014 production the best musical Iโd seen anywhere across the entirety of that year, whether in London or NYC; now this is the revival of the year so far. Max Alexander-Taylor needs to do ONCE next!

This is a must-see! Max Alexander-Taylor is wonderful playing Benjamin Scheuer, who originally played himself (and is therefore a particularly tough act to follow), but Max pulls it off magnificently.
