High boarding rates in EDs are caused by financial pressures, incentives to favor elective admissions and procedures, and a strained healthcare workforce. This complex problem requires a multi-pronged solution, and researchers offer suggestions in Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine:

A study found that GEDs had a higher diagnosis rate for 3 of 4 geriatric syndromes of interest and shorter ED lengths of stay than nongeriatric emergency departments. Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD, MBA, FACEP is joined by the author, Dr. Cameron Gettel, to discuss the findings: hubs.li/Q03gmsw10

Older adult patients with postmenopausal complaints can end up in the emergency department. Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD, MBA, FACEP is joined by Dr. Jennifer Wang to discuss important considerations for ED clinicians treating these patients. Listen now: hubs.li/Q03l1Ym20

Geriatric Transitional Care Nurses address the unique needs of older patients and help prevent hospital admissions. Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD, MBA, FACEP is joined by Dr. Ula Hwang and Pamela Martin for an in-depth discussion of how this beneficial role can be incorporated into EDs: hubs.li/Q03l2g5Z0

Nerve blocks can be effective for acute pain management and improve patient outcomes and experiences. Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD, MBA, FACEP is joined by Dr. Robert Stenberg to discuss 4 common types of nerve blocks that can be used with older adult patients in the ED. Listen now: hubs.li/Q03q4Lf00
