I was pretty busy yesterday answering lovely emails, so am belatedly saying a few things now: What a huge honor, especially to receive this thing with the amazing Doris Tsao and Winrich. What I did was child’s pay compared to the sophisticated work they carried out subsequently.

NS&B end of 3rd cycle lunch, with our fabulous teams of students and TAs Olivier Dubanet and Peng Xu! Two weeks later, we have an avalanche of data. Many thanks to Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), ZEISS Microscopy for an AxioZoom scope, Hamamatsu for an Orca Fire camera, and Charles Felts at RPI.

1/6 Exciting news! Our paper is now online in Cell! We've developed PRESYNAPTIC sensor and silencer for peptidergic transmission. The sensor detects LDCV release events, and the silencer specifically degrades neuropeptides inside the LDCV. authors.elsevier.com/a/1jTSjL7PXqREw

Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize. This didn't happen because she herself fought for it -- although she did fight hard the whole way to even get to that point. 👩‍🔬 What happened was that the award was offered to her husband, Pierre. (1/n) 🧵

Thrilled to share our paper online nature (on my birthday)! We've identified a new population of LepR neurons (BNC2) in the hypothalamus ARC that acutely suppresses appetite by directly inhibiting AGRP neurons, decoding the missing LepR GABAergic neurons. nature.com/articles/s4158…

I am thrilled to share the published version of our study on how neuropeptide signals regulate feeding in the hypothalamus! We imaged endogenous peptide signals in subcellular compartments during behavior. Below is an updated summary: rdcu.be/dZlI3

Apropos of never ending discussions about whether ANNs are "good" models of the nervous system, here is a slide I present to masters students showing a network that is found in motor control circuits *across phyla* (that's pretty ubiquitous!) I ask them to guess what it does...

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.
