The Old Coach said to his Seniors early one season, “Make sure you give it your all & enjoy it along the way, because Senior year basketball is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer to the end, the faster it goes.”

I told my players, “It’s OK to dream about what you would like to become, but wake up every now and then and work on it.”

When it comes to Defense, don’t give your players a complicated system to start a season. Especially when you have a big turnover of personnel or taking over a new position. Start with the basics, build slowly, avoid switching & complicated rotations with beginners & youngsters.

My 3 Keys to Winning Basketball Programs in my career: 1. Simple, but rock solid defensive philosophy. 2. A fast break that looks to run, but doesn't force it. 3. Strong rebounding on both ends of the court. #2 might be different for you, but tough to get by without #1 & #3.

One of the poorest choices you can make as a lower level (Jr Hi, Frosh/JV) coach is to play a base zone defense. Teach them M^M and learn to teach it well - basics. If you seriously need a change up in game & want to play zone, just draw one up & it will work fine at that level.

I still say, if the NFL wants fewer injuries to the players then: 1. Cut a couple of games from the schedule. 2. Dump Thursday Night Football. 3. Quit sending teams overseas & to South America. Less travel, more rest & recovery is the key to fewer injuries. But TV $$ runs it.

My suggestion to the coaches about to open the season: Get your Press Offense in before the 1st game. Doesn't need to be perfect, just make sure kids have an idea & plan to handle pressure when it comes. I liked working on pressure a little every practice. coachhack-go.sellfy.store/p/dont-press-y…

To be successful as a HS Basketball Coach, I had to: 1. Have a solid fundamental team. 2. Teach a good defensive approach. 3. Develop a Big to score inside. 4. Take advantage of a talented players in the offense. 5. Be good at rebounding both ends. 6. Handle full court pressure.

A basketball team solid in its fundamentals will have less turnovers, allowing more chances to score. Review your team's fundamentals often. “If you want a better chance of cutting down the nets at the end of the season, cut down your turnovers during the season.”
