Forty years ago, I visited at the height of the Troubles (Les évènements). At the time, much of the conflict played out in rural areas, with FLNKS battling “colon” farmers. Horrific events on the periphery: the 1984 Tiendanite massacre, the 1988 Ouvea crisis etc.

Lest we forget. May 14th marks the arrival of the first indentured laborers from India to Fiji in 1879, under the British colonial rule. May 14th is also the day Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka carried out the 1987 coup overthrowing the Timoci Bavadra Govt that led to an exodus of Indians from Fiji.

'Popular disquiet about government may have abated owing to Sogavare having for now relinquished the top office, but Honiara remains an easily combustible cauldron,' says Jon Fraenkel from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
