Dartmouth College: “you are all under arrest”

Some of us have been out of school for a while and may have forgotten our American history. Protesting injustice and expressing our opinions is part of our American tradition and what makes this, in fact, a free country. That’s what the Constitution is all about.

Truly nonviolent protest Dartmouth 🌲, riot cops seem to have arrested a student journalist for asking for badge numbers.

Happening now: Dartmouth history professor pushed and subsequently arrested by New Hampshire state police during peaceful encampment. More than 15 arrests now.

NEW: Just received footage of violence against student protesters at Dartmouth from Josh Paul, who quit the State Dept over Biden’s Gaza policy & the school invited to speak on a panel about dissent against US government policy tomorrow. He’s canceled his appearance, he told me.

Riot police at Dartmouth arresting and shoving to the ground a 65-year-old history professor, Annelise Orleans, for apparently yelling at them too sternly. Cool system we’ve got.

I’m a Dartmouth professor. Students were holding a genuinely peaceful, inclusive protest. Guess this guy is the new faculty.

Y’all Dartmouth is in the middle of nowhere in the Upper Valley and they have called law enforcement in with riot gear. This is not the way.

This is what Dartmouth 🌲 administration brought onto campus. Fully peaceful, inclusive protest. Arrested students, faculty, reporters.

This is Professor of History Annelise Orleck. She was (is? I cannot find verification if she is currently) the Chair of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth. Administrations are "fighting anti-semitism" by having cops assault their own prolific Jewish educators & courageous students.

Outside the college archive, Dartmouth 🌲 college. State cop confirmed to me that the officers in camo riot gear were "SWAT"--his word--backing up armored Special Event Response Team, which another officer told me were "riot." In *immediate* response to a small, peaceful gathering.

Tonight a small, peaceful, very inclusive group of Dartmouth students set up a modest camp on our Green. Dartmouth knew they were coming and responded state state riot police backed up by a state SWAT team. What are other instances of colleges IMMEDIATELY responding full force?

My colleague & friend, the great labor historian Prof. Annelise Orleck. Annelise is out & ok, but was told that a condition of her release is being banned from campus, despite currently teaching two courses.
