Some people still don't get it. Helping a young person regulate & bring them back into balance isn't rewarding bad behaviour. It is a fundamental part of our role. Sometimes, they just need to be seen, heard, and understood.🧠🌱

What does the research say? Are 92.1% of children distressed by school neurodivergent? Not as far as we know. When I see someone making claims based on research, I always go to have a look at the original paper. Several people have posted this paper, thinking it shows that

Gopnik should be compulsory reading for everyone in education. Young children are not mini adults, they have different needs.

I find this worrying, esp for children transitioning to secondary schools. Some children are absent minded. They forget things. They are punished & feel hurt & rejected. Their first lesson is to learn not to trust. Their second is to be wary about relationships. Not a good start.

Why are many schools not training staff about the importance of attachment. We have brain circuits wired for attachment & belonging. Most schools are also not trained in attachment theory, emotional regulation, & nervous system awareness, fight, flight conditions & more.🧠🌱

“Schools could game the system.” We won’t ever improve the educational outcomes or wider experience of school for children and young people with SEND unless we have school leaders with integrity and an ethical culture. 1/2

Ofsted can measure their version of inclusion as much as they like but I suspect it will make very little difference to children with SEND unless we have a dramatic change of culture. Perhaps Ofsted should ask the children their definition of inclusion. 2/2
