#COVID19 work continues for MSTP student Katarina Braun, MD, PhD alongside the labs of Thomas Friedrich and Dave O'Connor - “You know you want to be able to track how each of those viruses is circulating, which viruses are circulating, because it will save lives."

Today, Sen. Tammy Baldwin joined Becky Blank and researchers Thomas Friedrich, Dave O'Connor, Katarina Braun, MD, PhD, Gage Moreno and others to discuss #UWMadison efforts to sequence variants and study transmission of the virus that causes #covid19.

Great interview with MSTP Katarina Braun, MD, PhD- check out Here & Now for April 9, 2021 pbswisconsin.org/watch/here-and…

Congrats Katarina Braun, MD, PhD ! We are all proud of you!

Thread on our preliminary work on viral loads in #SARSCoV2 vaccine breakthrough. This work is led by Kasen Riemersma in my lab in collaboration with Dave O'Connor oconnorlab and @publichealthmdc. (1/15) Preprint: medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

What factors shape evolution of influenza virus within an individual? Happy to share our collaborative work led by Katie Amato, PhD with Luis and Kat and TCF lab, Stacey Schultz-Cherry, and Koelle Lab that shows genetic bottlenecks restrain intrahost influenza virus evolution. 1/10

This work has been literally years in the making. Thanks to Mehle Lab for scientific leadership, Katie Amato, PhD Katarina Braun, MD, PhD and @haddock_tony for hard work/thought and perseverance, and key insights and input from Koelle Lab and Stacey Schultz-Cherry !

It has been a big week for students in my lab! Let me sing their praises… UW MSTP (University of Wisconsin-Madison) Microbiology Doctoral Training Program UW-Madison CMB

But wait, there’s more! Katarina Braun, MD, PhD has received the Exceptional Thesis Award from UW-Madison CMB! The award cites the “flexibility, resourcefulness, and creativity” that allowed Kat to quickly begin work on SARS-CoV-2 evolution at the start of the pandemic. Congrats Kat!

New paper on H7N9 influenza evolution within and between hosts from Katarina Braun, MD, PhD Luis (Tony) Haddock, PhD and many wonderful collaborators! Kat has the details below.

Where do new #SARSCoV2 variants come from? Unusually long infections in immunocompromised people may be one important source. New preprint with peter 1/2mann Dave O'Connor and many others to look at viral evolution in one individual with a very long infection. Nick Minor has details!

After 5 great years, I've wrapped up my time in the TCF lab! Grateful to everyone in the lab & esp to Thomas Friedrich for being a great mentor. And now, I'm excited to start my postdoc tomorrow studying congenital CMV with Sallie Permar MD PhD at Weill Cornell Medicine! 👩🔬
