Turkey has one of the highest rates of children population living in relative income poverty. The interesting thing is the situation of Southern Europe countries which have still the highest levels of #childpoverty among European welfare states.

I’m uneasy about it too. It’s stressful & scary, but it’s also out of my control, so the best thing I can do is try to focus that attention on the most urgent issues of our time: climate change, good gov, jobs, wages, justice; and highlight the contradictions you explain here.

My core economics view is very simple. 1) Economics is a social science. 2) Its role is to help us understand history (Smith, Marx) and increase welfare (Marshall). 3) The central part of economics is economics of growth and economics of inequality (Ricardo; Kuznets).

Immanuel Wallerstein, the founder of the World-System Theory approach, has left us. He began his work under the tutelage of C. Wright Mills, but - after dissertation work in West Africa - discovered the Third World. His first book, in 1961, was a study of African nationalism.

Dear Universities UK, as an international alumni of @spsw who pay most expensive tuition fee in Europe, I support the legitimate #USS struggle of the University of York academics who I am proud to have as lecturers and who have one of the most modest employee rights in Europe. My daughter just made this for the #usstrike strike tomorrow. University of Leeds is off her list of potential universities unless they remove the threat of punitive ASOS deductions sharpish. And she would be a massive loss to any university (in 6 years time)!
