I’ve been particularly unobservant for several decades and only just noticed this rather large spine on the rear tibia of a relatively common beetle. Give yourself a pat on the back if you can name it! Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland

Proper birders out there. Is it unusual to still see swallows feeding young in their nest in the last week of September? Noticed this today in South Yorkshire.

Tricky pair of Zopheridae, very subtle differences difficult to describe for comparison. On the left Synchita variegata, on the right Synchita undata. If it’s on Beech good bet it’s variegata, on Sycamore undata. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland #Saproxylic #Coleoptera #Zopheridae

Metoecus paradoxus, North-east Derbyshire garden, this morning. Garden usually has three wasps nests, this year only one nest so pleasantly surprised to see this beetle this year. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland

Ilybius fuliginosus, be it puddle, pond, lake margin, stream or river, this little beast finds its way into the net. Probably the most catholic in terms of habitat of all UK water beetles. Oh, and it’s a bit of a looker as well with its beautiful bicoloured elytra. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
