Today I told 2 different mom friends that I am leaving soon for a 4-week “away” rural rotation and they both had the same wide-eyed reaction: “and you’ll only have to look after yourself for 4 whole weeks!" Oh yes.

Road trip up to my rural FP placement! We’ve been driving for 8 hours and are still next to the Fraser river. Also, not even half-way there yet. Getting a good sense of just how big BC is.

Pro-tip for anyone giving lectures over Zoom: check in and see if your students need a 5-minute break. It's just not good learning when you sit through 4 straight hours of Zoom lecture with no breaks.

Ten months into the pandemic and I've just now rearranged the furniture so that when I'm sitting at my desk on Zoom, the background isn't my unmade bed

Today I watched a surgeon talk rapid-fire to a patient whose first language wasn’t English. When the surgeon walked away, I hung back and asked the patient if he had understood, then explained again slowly and in simple words. Feels good to make a difference for someone.

The cool thing about neuro is that you can predict the lesion from the sx: back pain + tingling, radiating down the side of the leg to dorsum of foot: L5 nerve compression. Exactly what my MRI showed. What's not cool is how much this hurts. Ow ow ow.

16 y ago, I left a post-doctoral research job to be a stay-at-home mom, knowing it would be almost impossible to get back into research. Today, I’m thrilled that I matched into UBC’s research track in Psychiatry. I get to be a psychiatrist, AND I have another crack at research!
