As we ushered into 2023, our quest to continue providing access to justice has been renewed. Indeed, 2022 was an eventful year in the execution of our mandate through the provision of legal representations and legal awareness outreach programs.

Take up that brief for the unpopular client. That is how most distinguished lawyers made their bones. In the meantime, be slow to belittle those doing it. Everyone is entitled to legal representation, Lucifer included. This legal sermon is limited to lawyers and law students.

In a landmark judgment delivered on the 9th March, 2023, a High Court Judge acquitted and discharged our client on all 8 count charges of Sexual Offences after 4 years of trial.

The judgment has renewed our commitment to provide effective and efficient legal representation to individuals going through the criminal justice process.

It further strengthens our quest for adherence to due process in ensuring that the fundamental rights to fair hearing throughout the criminal justice process are always observed. We would, therefore, like to seize this opportunity to thank our team of dedicated Public Defenders.

As we strive to achieve the best legal outcomes for our clients, we wish to state that a High Court Judge delivered a judgment on the 14th March, 2023, wherein one of our clients was acquitted and discharged of murder. The Judge held that our client acted in self-defence.

Having spent 6 years in prison on a charge of murder, NALA is pleased to secure the release of a woman (our client) in her late 40s from Mile II Central Prison. This came due to a judgment delivered sometime in 2022 wherein a judge gave a special verdict (guilty but insane).

Following a medical examination as per the requirement of the law, it was recommended that our client was stable and should be discharged to join the family in 2022. Unfortunately, due to bureaucratic procedures it took the relevant authority 5 months to endorse the report.

The unnecessary bureaucratic procedures in endorsing the medical report resulted to the continuous detention of our client who was mentally unstable at the time of the offence.
