The way Du Bois describes elephants (compared to the slaves who had to carry their tasks in their one way trip) in the W&A is the earliest form of decolonial animal ethics that I can think of.

Ichiyō's "Takekurabe" (Child's Play) was insanely inspirational. It's so hard to read it in Japanese and the English version makes it so easy to read (thanks to interpretational translation) but once you get the original layers, she is nothin but pure genius.
