Representation matters. Seeing yourself matters. When we always illustrate Parkinson's disease as the 'old man' - we are forgetting so many people living with PD. Lets' do better.

A beautiful take. This 100% aligns with my values. “Science may be the method I use, but people are the motivation for everything I do.” 💯

University managers: “We support #AcademicMentalHealth” Me: “Reduce faculty workloads, support PhD students, increase postdoc salaries, accommodate disabled and neurodivergent staff, create more permanent jobs” Managers: “Not like that” The PhD Place OpenAcademics

The way people excuse bad behavior in academia is one of the hardest things to grapple with. “Oh, that’s just how he is” “They didn’t mean it like that” Or worse… [SILENCE] This culture where people are reluctant to hold each other accountable is debilitating.

I have wanted to go on Einstein A Go Go since Dr Shane Huntington OAM ran the first #20phds20mins but the timing was never quite right. But today I got to talk to Shane, Chris KP, and Dr Susi Seibt of Shelium about my love for mitochondria and their importance in Parkinson's Disease 1/2

And what a way to announce to the twitter-sphere (X-sphere) that I have left the 'lab'! Tomorrow is my first day in my new role with In2science. I first volunteered with In2Science over a decade ago as an undergrad at Unimelb - and I am excited to be able to join the team. 2/2

Mammoth effort from all involved. Particularly big congrats to Annabell! A big achievement so early in her PhD with DewsonLab - the team is lucky to have you aboard for your PhD journey. More wonderful milestones to come!

Big congratulations to Australian Science Media Centre on such a wonderful project, with big impact - definitely deserved of recognition by the ASC and the wider Aussie SciComm community. The project is a model for how we should be engaging with all stakeholders in the SciComm lifecycle.

Ultimately for me, it came to this comparison. Leaving the lab and the academic ‘track’ I had planned for myself - was so so so so hard. But the alternative was harder.

Huge congratulations to Leo and team Michael Lazarou & collaborators for this beautiful story - now in pre-print. It was a pleasure seeing this work develop during my time WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute). Presynapses are mitophagy pit stops that prevent axon degeneration biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

If you're running a lab in academia, then you have a leadership job and a leadership development job. It's part of your job to be a good leader now to the people in your group as well as to help them grow as leaders so they will be prepared for their future careers.

Congrats to Marlene & Verena for winning this year’s Art of Science - moving image category!! I am lucky to have played a small part in the production of these beautiful images. Still in awe of the single cell detail you can see with this workflow. I do miss imaging 💛🔬🧠
