I think this is a good example of villous linear subtrophoblastic mineralization, a distinctive pattern that has been associated w/ congenital anomalies, Trisomy 21, anencephaly, & antenatal Bartter syndrome. This case: cytogenetics = Trisomy 21 #obpath #placentapath

Leon Metlay Each pathologist is entitled to have their own preferences. It's OK if placenta isn't your favorite. But you know what is rude? When colleagues openly deride #placentapath. Show some respect. You wouldn't be alive right now if you didn't have a decent placenta supporting you. 1/2

Example of villi with negative stromal cells but few/rare positive cytotrophoblast Interested to see how many people have seen this discordant pattern! (3/3) #obpath #placentapath Leon Metlay Jasmine Steele, MD

#placentapath #obpath I have a favor to ask! If you use a dissecting microscope to evaluate for villi, what's the make/model🔬? Either I don't know how to properly use the one in my lab, or it's the wrong kind 🤷‍♀️ Thank you!! 🙏 Leon Metlay Jasmine Steele, MD E. Heidi Cheek, MHS, PA(ASCP)

@cpschukow Not sure if you're asking for yourself or not, but if I see a rare plasma cell or two in villi in the context of basal / interface pattern of chronic villitis / VUE (especially when there's plasma cell deciduitis), I ignore them. #placentapath

Continuing the placental microorganism theme from last week, here's a case of placental listeriosis. The inset shows the gram positive rods that cause this patchy necrosis and exudative inflammation. #pathtwitter #pathx #pathology #placentapath

Ugly necrotizing chorioamionitis in a placenta from a G6P1 pt at 19 weeks gestation with loss of fluid. This case also had dramatic funisitis. #placentapath #pathology #pathx #pathtwitter #histology
