It’s fantastic to see these exceptional specimens of Ptychodus published, which confirm that it’s a pelagic galeomorph and not a benthic hybodont. However, I’m highly skeptical that it’s a lamniform like the authors suggest.

Saw glimpses of this before and I'm excited it's now out: new articulated Ptychodus skeletons from Late Cretaceous Mexico! Confirms that they were pelagic fast-swimming lamniforms, as some had already astutely speculated
Paper link wasn't working earlier, now in replies ⬇️

New apperance and affinites of the genus Ptychodus based on excepcional new specimens from Mexico

'The results reveal it was a kind of mackerel shark and it looked like the extant porbeagle shark, a fast-swimming pelagic form'

A plate of pelagic larval fishes. Many fishes, who as adults are reef bound, have pelagic larvae that travel currents for various amounts of time before settling as a means of dispersal.
