Another exciting expedition with California Academy of Sciences to explore the deep reefs (Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems) of the Maldives. This time we will be looking at some of the reefs in Dhaalu and Malé atoll. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming days.

The study highlights the need to include mesophotic reefs in marine protected areas, update international agreements combating plastic pollution, & develop low-cost biodegradable alternatives to fishing gear that won’t adversely impact communities relying on sustainable fishing.

Mesophotic coral reefs are seen as havens for shallow reefs amidst climate change. New study tested if deep-origin coral larvae can survive on shallow reefs. Results suggest low potential for them to recruit to shallow reefs. #CoralReefs #ClimateChange

Serranocirrhitus latus, the Sunburst Anthias, is the sole member of this unusual genus. It lives in loose groups, often swimming upside down in caves and ledges. While this is not a true mesophotic species, they are commonest in the upper mesophotic, between 30 to 60 m.
