Finally saw my first #Malleefowl while carrying out track maintenance at #CharlesDarwinReserve . Just a little bit excited!!!

20-odd years and I still meet landholders that blow my mind. Today a bloke showed us the wetlands he’s actively managing for painted-snipe, bitterns & native fish, with a side trip to one of the active malleefowl mounds he’s monitoring. All power to private land conservationists.

Communication is key... Malleefowl work on their mounds in pair, moving sand to adjust to the temperature, but sometimes disagrements can happen... Nice😂😂

Someone's been busy- new #malleefowl mound

Any day is a great day when you find a #Malleefowl at sunrise on the way to surveys! This is only the second one I’ve seen, and the first that I’ve managed to get a photo of. They’re very elusive and surprisingly hard to re-find in the bush despite their large size.

And with feral predators being one of the threats, the cat control project at #CharlesDarwinReserve is critical to protect this #ThreatenedSpecies

This exclosure keeps feral animals out. They have recently released numbats here in an attempt to reintroduce them to the Eyre Peninsula. Malleefowl can be found here too. I went in and walked a bit but it was super hot so I didn't stay too long.

The best #bird today in #Wildoz was this Endangered Mallee Emu-wren. We got some absolutely amazing views. Support included Malleefowl, Chestnut Quail-thrush, Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo, Crimson Chat & Crested Bellbird. Birding Ecotours #bird ing #bird watching BirdLife Australia
