The chambered tomb at Maeshowe, Orkney, Scotland, 2,800 BC. For around 6 weeks the setting winter sun aligns with the bee-hive-shaped chamber of the cairn which has been compared in construction and quality with the Great Pyramid of Giza. No grave goods were found in either.

Wideford Hill Chambered Cairn, with its three concentric stone walls. Dating from around 3500-2400 BC, the ‘Maeshowe-type’ cairn is built into the side of Wideford Hill, near Kirkwall in Orkney. 📷 My own.

The secrets of a distant age: the Barnhouse Stone near the Ness of Brodgar, Orkney, lines up with the entrance to Maeshowe (some 800 yds away) at the setting midwinter sun so that light shines into the inner chamber. Part of a fascinating Neolithic landscape.

Never understand when herritage organisations get precious about cameras - same at Gavrinis
the 1's and 0's of my digital camera are going to hurt the stones? 🙄
