One part of my #histPublicHealth collection focuses on dogs, and I have a fair number of rabies tags and certificates, and licenses, and I find them so evocative, as objects embodying human-animal relationships and pasts. This dog license is from 1931 in Ontario.

Teaching cholera in #histpublichealth tomorrow, and Im beginning with two bits of music: a modern folk version of Stephen Foster's 1854 Hard Times Come Again No More, and Fanny Mendelssohn’s Cholera Cantata, composed to honor victims of the cholera epidemic in Berlin of 1831.

The thing I don't really get about people of Robert K*nnedy Jr's generation overall is that they witnessed the polio and smallpox vaccination programs in action, and the power of vaccines. Just a truly remarkable series of moments in #histmed #histPublicHealth. And yet.

Found this card from the State of New Jersey Board of Health, c. 1899 tracing smallpox cases in Newark, but the curious thing is that I found this in an Indian seller's collections, all the way over in Bombay. Ephemerae can be so fascinating. #histmed #histPublicHealth

Recent #histmed #histPublicHealth acquisition: a nearly 100 year old Diphtheria Protection Certificate issued in Ohio, which also features the public health messaging: "No Child in Ohio Need Die of Diphtheria", issued by the State Director of Health.

Contrast this to the preaching tone of many ads, or the use of disability or sick bodies to provoke fear in the audience, this is just compelling, simple. #histmed #histPublicHealth Yul Brynner American Cancer Society anti-smoking PSA youtu.be/iikQoFpNBNg

I collect #histmed #histPublicHealth stamps, seals and ephemera, and sometimes the graphic design on these stamps is so beautiful.

One of my recent #histPublicHealth #histmed finds recently, is just so incredibly cool. A tuberculosis seal issued by the Spanish protectorate of Morocco, in 1951. Im really intrigued by (what I think is) the adaptation of the cross of Lorraine here, absolutely fascinating.

"Athletes do not smoke: It's a matter of life and breath" A recent acquisition, a Christmas seal issued by the Quebec Christmas Seals Society, in 1971. This seal served as public health messaging, as well as likely raising funds. #histmed #DisHist #histPublicHealth

Reading for today's lectures on polio, disability, and history, and I'm somewhat depressed to realise that simply stating these facts in public today summons the absolutely rabid anti-v*xx crowd (cw: dated language on disability) #histPublicHealth #histmed

Im a teaching a #histPublicHealth course this semester, focusing on vaccination pasts, and one question I ask students is if they think that smallpox could be eradicated in 2023, had it not been eradicated in the 20thc. Increasingly, students are answering no.
