He was a tax collector for the Crown in today's terminology, he was an Exciseman.

They're grabbing his coat tails and lying to everyone

Signatures of poet and lyricist Robert Burns, who died 21 July 1796.

Burns was employed as an exciseman and his signatures in the excise salary book from April to July of that year sadly reflected his declining health.
