Some cool cucumbers from Loch Creran.

Just like above water, there are seasonal changes in wildlife underwater through the year. The sea cucumbers have certainly appeared in good numbers this year in Loch Creran.

What if the kraken was an echinoderm instead of a cephalopod? It is something I have been thinking about for the past few weeks. Echinoderms are very much 'eldritch' creatures but no one speaks of it.

I’m listening to a podcast aimed towards children that teaches about stuff in the ocean at work for funsies. I’m walking around answering to it when it’s says “can you say, echinoderm?” I literally shouted out “echinoderm!”, coincidentally near our echinoderms at work.

Our soft bottoms are very much dominated by echinoderms (sea urchins, sea stars, sea cucumbers and crinoids). However, it is not common to find 4 sea stars in just one beam trawl: Luidia sarsi, Marthasterias glaciaris, Echinaster sepositus & Astropecten irregularis.

Starfish reproduction is a complex topic. But for our purposes, suffice it to say that many of these star-shaped echinoderms have the charming habit of spraying sperm around by waving their many arms (usually five). They also can reproduce by splitting in half,

both well-oxygenated and not rapidly deposited, which is weird for a Lagerstatte. The formation preserves a diverse community of animals such as trilobites, echinoderms, molluscs, worms, and a wide array of radiodonts (4 different species from 3 different families)

Echinoderms possess a nervous system, giving them the quality of being a 'living' thing, yet it is not centralized, therefore these cannot be classified as sentient, but of 'course, if the show focus on marine life, they need to implement diversity one way or the other.

American University Among other things... tips on how to make cool preps to study the endoskeletons of various echinoderms, including Arbacia punctata (a cool species of SE atlantic urchin) and Ctenodiscus crispatus (mud star)!

ms.sinn Well, they float and about 6 of us can fit on a good longboard. Also, the fins make good hard surfaces to bash clams on.

Urchins are tasty, but they are the most effort out of all echinoderms to eat. Kinda like eating crawfish vs lobster: lots of effort for little bits of reward

Alex Klotz One of my favorite cases is in echinoderms.

In early development, they're bilateral. Then a growth on one side buds off and grows into the radial body form we're used to for the group. Several groups then later evolved a bilateral form on top of that radial underlying biology.
