So happy to be back Bowdoin Kent Island! Our field season is off to a fantastic start with lots of Savannah Sparrows on territory and many cold but beautiful sunrises! Our song meters are recording, the Savannah Sparrows are singing, and soon the nesting will begin!

Savannah Sparrow adults often make this call when they are at their nest together. Why?! In the first phase of experiments at Bowdoin Kent Island, I am playing this call to nestlings to see if it elicits gaping. Next phase: what does it elicit in the adults? My new paper is out in Bioacoustics: 'Field tests of small autonomous recording units: an evaluation of in-person versus automated point counts and a comparison of recording quality.'

Having a blast working with Helena Souffrant at Bowdoin Kent Island! We combine our Savannah Sparrow and Tree Swallow research to ask: do sparrows build nests closer to swallow boxes? Sparrows may benefit from proximity to Tree Swallows, who are skilled predator detectors. Let's see!

(2/6) We explored the territories of Savannah Sparrows. My collaborators have mapped sparrows’ male territories on @BSSKentIsland for more than a decade. With GIS, I calculated the area of 485 territories from 2011-2022 and found high territory size variation.

Male Savannah Sparrows are arriving from migration in the fog of the Bay of Fundy. Our research team Bowdoin Kent Island is banding the males, mapping their territories, and recording their songs.

What’s in a song? Quite a lot, according to Professor of Biology Heather Williams ’77 of Williams College. She’s the lead author of a recent high-profile study on the cultural evolution of bird song, using decades of data collected on Kent Island.buff.ly/3U6kLLf

I am grateful for my wonderful advisor Dan Mennill and my awesome co-authors and collaborators Bowdoin Kent Island. I am especially thankful for the Savannah Sparrows who cooperatively sang and showed us their nests!

Three cheers for Sarah Dobney for completing our ninth annual acoustic survey of Kent Island! 🙌🙌🙌
This photo shows our Song Meter on the north tip of Bowdoin Kent Island, with Hay Island in the background (where Sarah is recording now), and Grand Manan on the horizon.
