'A distillery a day' #114 Ardross (Highland) 2019 This 19th Century farm steading has been saved and repurposed by Greenwood Distillers. A relatively young co. but experienced hands behind the wheel with 50 years in the industry with Bowmore & Chivas.

Came across this pine marten latrine in a Sitka spruce in Ardross. Surprisingly the droppings have a beautiful floral scent hence marten’s former name of ‘sweetmart’. In stark contrast to the ‘foulmart’ or polecat. They are stinkers.

The 1980 Goodwood Cup formed the middle leg of a memorable triple header between Le Moss and Ardross. Edging his rival by 3/4L in the Ascot Gold Cup, Le Moss finished a neck in front at Goodwood (picture), and repeated that margin in the Doncaster Cup.

Fun bit of trivia! Anyone watching Traitors on BBC will have been introduced to the Ardross Castle Estate where it was filmed. But did you know that RGS Chair of Governors & donor of Perrins Hall & the Science Block, C. W . Dyson Perrins, owned the Ardross Estate, from 1898?

Ardross was the last Cup King from a golden era for the stayers division. In his final campaign in 1982, he won the Jockey Club Stakes, Yorkshire Cup, Henry II Stakes, Ascot Gold Cup, Geoffrey Freer Stakes (pictured after giving Lester his 4000th winner) and Doncaster Cup.

The Traitors castle (Ardross) was built for Alexander Matheson in the Scots baronial style: he was an entrepreneur, politician and railway bloke. He’s buried in Kirkton Churchyard, Lochalsh. #TheTraitorsUK
