Leif Ove Andsnes playing the 5th of the Six Impromptus Op. 5 that Finnish composer Jean Sibelius wrote. Sibelius (1865-1957) was at the crossroads of many influences one can perceive in his pieces: romanticism, impressionism (Debussy), wagnerism, national folk Finnish music.➡️

Although I can't say I find Satie's music 'nourishing', his calculated wackiness was culturally apt. Pieces like “3 Pieces in the Shape of a Pear”, “Flabby Preludes for a Dog” and “Desiccated Embryos” rewardingly deflate Wagnerism's excesses in a characteristically French way.

Alex Ross is a musically illiterate fool and his book “Wagnerism” is pretentious, trivial garbage, but it did have this funny Trump-Wagner connection in it.
“Never again.”

We'd do well to remember that our conventions regarding applause at classical music concerts developed relatively recently as a reflection of the cultish mores of Wagnerism. Previously, applause both after and WITHIN individual movements was commonplace.

Although I can't say I find the music of Erik Satie nourishing, his absurdism was wonderfully apt. By giving his pieces titles like “3 Pieces in the Shape of a Pear”, “Flabby Preludes for a Dog” and “Desiccated Embryos”, he helped deflate the excesses of Wagnerism. Very French.
