are highly social mammals that travel in large, close-knit communities, causing them to get stranded in groups. The survival rate for beached whales is usually low, as the animals can only sustain themselves on land for about six hours.

According to the Western Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, there are four pods of pilot whales stranded, and around 28 died. Many visitors at the beach worked together with rescuers to hold the animals upright to help them breathe.
