New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006 made NZSL an official language creating rights and obligations to ensure that Deaf community has the same access to information and services as everybody else.
Why are we not adding sign language on road signs?

Miss9 has been off school sick all week and taught herself NZ sign language from a website she discovered. She did this entirely of her own accord. I am so beyond impressed and her NZSL vocabulary is growing rapidly!

Today marks the start of New Zealand Sign Language Week. So I looked up what bat or pekapeka is on NZSL Dictionary and I was stoked to see the flapping of arms just like a bat! A very easy one to remember! nzsl.nz/signs/7048 Deaf Aotearoa

Hoping this technology makes its way to @bcfc for next season. Having had to learn NZSL this year it was great to be able to see a 2 year old acknowledging and responding to the signing.

This week is Week. Check out this resource page for guides on signs to use in different contexts: nzslweek.org.nz/resources/ Mariners have also used non-audio comms for centuries. Signaling lights like this one were once on most vessels and used Morse code. NZMM 2004.195.2

20,000 people in NZ use New Zealand Sign Language, approximately 4,600 are Deaf. β€œNZSL is an official language, but it is endangered.
I would argue that it's even more endangered then te reo, and nobody is promoting this......

When you spend your life pushing for spoken-language interpreting working conditions to meet the better sign-language interpreting ones, but the government has plans to make *all* of it shittier insteadπŸ™ƒ

Disability community whānau, come to this, great chance to hear about the Green Party's vision for an accessible inclusive Aotearoa where disabled people live with dignity. I'm co-facilitating. It's NZSL interpreted. There's time for questions too.
