From this closeup of the chevrons, you can probably see why Mouse thinks this stem was re-carved, causing the curious proportions. The base is circular moulded with spurs on a thin square resting on a 2-stage square plinth #StChristopherLympsham #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday

The C12 font of #StChristopherLympsham #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday So curiously proportioned it could well be an assemblage. Certainly the stem seems to have been later re-carved from a single shaft to add the chevrons. Once painted and with religious texts. Scrubbed since 2007

The early 18thC font at St Peter's, Oundle is very elegant, it reminds me slightly of a Victorian cast iron stove in its solidity. #FontsOnFriday

Winchester's font shows stories from life of St Nicholas (Santa Claus). He gives bags of gold to a poor nobleman who passes them to his daughters. Saint threw 3 gold bags down a chimney so a poor man's daughters could claim dowries & be married #FontsonFriday

Word font originates from #Latin for "fons" meaning well or fountain. Tournai limestone or marble was sought after & expensive, difficult to carve & indicates the high status of the commissioning #church. 4 Tournai fonts exist in #Hampshire. #FontsonFriday

Two #FontsOnFriday for the price of one at Rushbrooke, Suffolk. One wood, one stone, both 19th Century, although the stone font appears to be placed on a late medieval stem. Just one aspect of what is a quirky, delightful church. 1/2 Rushbrooke: suffolkchurches.co.uk/rushbrooke.htm

Warborough's font, faintly louche with its ring of oasis, is a palimpsest - #Romanesque lead bowl with rosettes and little figures of apostles (?) underneath the arches (sing it!), placed on a C14th base, and with a baroque cover #FontsOnFriday #Oxfordshire
