Some cool fossil news for : a new specimen has been discovered belonging to the group of giant -relatives, the diprotodontids, with soft-tissue impressions that shed light on how their hands were adapted for long-distance walking.

Australia has Pleistocene megafauna, just like North America, but they have GIANT MARSUPIALS like Diprotodon, a really big wombat (sadly, extinct)!

Our next combatants are no stranger to MMM: this species last competed in 2013 but family members competed in 2014 (Diprotodon) and 2017 (Hairy nosed wombat). But this time, they've WISED UP and brought the whole WISDOM.

The skull of Euryzygoma dunense. A 2.5 m long diprotodontid with unusual bony flanges jutting out from the sides of its face. It is possibly an ancestor to the giant Diprotodon optatum (which would imply it lost these flanges, intriguingly).

When working on the largest marsupials to ever exist sometimes it's nice to 3D print some smaller ones out to make comparisons just a little easier. Below are a bunch of skulls to show you just how diverse this group is. How many can you name?

The humans who drove much of the megafauna to extinction, including Diprotodon australis (giant wombat) & Macropus titan (giant kangaroo)were in fact the indigenous peoples, praised for their husbandry of ‘country’.

But Australia Post wouldn’t dare state that in their bulletin.
