Finally, the latest long-awaited addition to my 'Scottish' history library. 🙂 The Rev. James Fraser may have landed in Europe earlier than this copy, but it got here at last.

It was great to put my history hat back on for a day and speak to David Worthington about his newest book! The Rev James Fraser shows that opportunity is everywhere in the Highlands – then and now. UHI Centre for History pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/education/5…

While Fraser was, of course, fallible, I can vouch for this being a hugely revealing and compelling read. It's key to two book chapters and two articles of mine. A unique account by a Gaelic-speaker from the Highlands of a three-year tour through 1650s Europe.

Not to copy Jamie Kelly, but I'm also delighted to receive a copy of David Worthington's book today. I'm curious to see how Rev Fraser's experiences shaped his scholarly works, particularly the Wardlaw MS.

Diverted on heading west from Elgin today to three meaningful places for Rev. James Fraser: St Peter's, Duffus, his wife, Margaret Symmer's parish church; Kinloss Abbey, stones from which helped build Inverness's Cromwellian citadel; site of the Battle of Auldearn.

Local minister, Rev. James Fraser (1634-1709) wasn't averse to stargazing from within metres of the spot shown here. He reported that, around 11pm one October 1666 night, light beamed down into the parish from a ‘Constellation whose Influence hangs over our head’.

S Fraser Agreed. I am struck time and time again by how culturally connected and how well versed they were. It is hard to find any evidence to back up the perception that they were uneducated. I'm looking forward to hearing more on the from David Worthington

Just finished by David Worthington. As a linguist and historian (in purely chronological order 😉) I was particularly interested in the north Highlands as 'Babel of tongues'. Thank you for the fascinating read.

Grateful for the responses to this. Many of us fail to recognise the extent to which Gaelic and Scots song - contemporary and subsequent - has influenced perceptions of the pre-Culloden Highlands. I'm holding out for a concept album about James Fraser (1634-1709)
