How are / crops approved for human consumption in the US?

🌿The idea of substantial equivalence🌿

🧬 If two varieties are equivalent on the molecular level, they pose equivalent risk to consumers

🧬Compare proteins, metabolites, and allergens🌽

Enjoyed a fruitful weekend trip to with @ShaySalz. Met with plant anatomist Barry Tomlinson to discuss my senior thesis, spent a lovely evening with Drs. Naomi Pierce and Andrew Berry and enjoyed seeing behind the scenes Harvard Organismic & Evolutionary Biology and Arnold Arboretum.

Other nutrients beyond dietary fiber may have a relevant impact on gut health. This new review explores in depth how interactions between dietary lipids and the gut microbiota influence host physiology (and Bilophila wadsworthia is a relevant player) ow.ly/CYVP30pS9wd

What does bacteria in our intestine eat? Mainly the fibers in the vegetables.
In addition to fibers, scientists also found that dietary fats can also interact with our gut bacteria, but we don't know how exactly the interactions happen.

🎣 This new paper has been making waves! Researchers have recently described social predation (pack hunting) in electric eels, which are usually thought to be solitary predators. It is thought that hunting in packs may improve their success rates!

Editorial: Hype or hope?

Microbiome research has attracted considerable attention, in part because of the potential to manipulate the microbiome for human health. To fulfil this promise, tractable methods and cautious interpretation of results are needed. nature.com/articles/s4157…

I captured this shot of a Feather-Legged fly at the Cornucopia project in our squash and strawberry high-tunnel. I didn't know what it was at the time so thanks to this site (mdc.mo.gov/discover-natur…) for helping me learn more! [3/3]

Do you want to sleep better, run faster, and make more friends? The 'MICROBIOME' field becomes increasingly popular in the past decade because almost every disease you can think of is proposed to be related to gut microflora.
