Yet in 1732 a Black boy, or possibly man, John Worcester, was baptised here.

Sgt William R. Clarke, from Jamaica, was the first black pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. He was described in 1915 as ‘full of energy and is hard as nails’. He was first posted to No. 4 Sqn where he flew RE8’s.
