I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of Dave Rowley: news.uchicago.edu/story/david-b-…. Dave was my introduction to Geology research, and his patience and kindness made me feel welcomed in both his research group and classroom. I'll also never forget this painting hung above his desk:

Kicking off the BrinMRC Summer School on Tracer Mixing Across Planetary Scales with Peter Driscoll from Carnegie EPL! I'm excited for the next two weeks focused on numerical simulations of planetary interiors, oceans, and atmospheres and discussions with our students/lecturers.

We've had a wonderful second and third days of the BrinMRC 2024 Summer School on Tracer Mixing Across Planetary Scales, featuring talks by Xi Zhang, Cheng Li, UMD's own Deep Ray (not pictured), Marianna Linz, and Daniel Lecoanet! We're also getting group projects going.

We had a perfect end to the first week of our BrinMRC summer school on tracer mixing with UMD's own Richard Walker discussing mantle tracers, Baylor Fox-Kemper showing regimes in which oceanic tracers can be treated linearly, Xi Zhang applying tracer theory to exoplanets, and dinner!

We had a hot and humid but fun BrinMRC group outing to Great Falls Park this weekend! Some of us did the Billy Goat trail, which involved some scrambling next to the Potomac. A subset of us topped it off with a trip to the National Mall on Sunday, visiting Smithsonian’s NMAAHC and Smithsonian NMNH.

We started off Week 2 of the BrinMRC school on Tracer Mixing Across Planetary Scales today with two ocean talks in very different regimes by Wanying Kang (MIT EAPS) and Baylor Fox-Kemper (Brown DEEPS), and Deep Ray (UMD Math Department) discussed his work on AI for shock capturing.

We wrapped up our last full day of talks BrinMRC tracer mixing with Mingming Li (School of Earth and Space Exploration) telling us about the origin of LLSVPs, Jake Gebbie (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)) discussing the link between ocean tracers and climate, and Wanying Kang (MIT EAPS) on the dynamics of icy satellite oceans.
