1 #cyanoTC2018: Saxitoxins (#STXs), also known as paralytic shellfish toxins (#PSTs), are neurotoxins produced by marine dinoflagellates and freshwater #cyanobacteria (CB). This research is focused on the extraction and analysis of STXs from water, CB and #foodSupplements

2 #cyanoTC2018: Extraction of STXs from CB biomass and CB-based #foodSupplements was conducted using acetic acid with or without solid phase extraction (#SPE) cleanup. Target analytes were also extracted from water samples using SPE and analyzed by #HILIC-MS/MS

3 #cyanoTC2018: Separation of #STX, #neoSTX and six #Gonyautoxins (#GTXs) was carried out on a #Zic_HILIC column with ACN/H2O as mobile phases. Identification and quantification of each toxin achieved using its characteristic MRM transitions

4 #cyanoTC2018: Method trueness, as % recovery, was found to be in the range of 70% to 90% for #GTXs, while #STXs exhibited lower recoveries for both, biomass and water. In addition, method reproducibility and LODs are satisfactory for all #PSTs in both sample matrices

5 #cyanoTC2018: The proposed methods were applied to CB biomass and water samples collected by #GreekLakes as well as to commercially available #spirulina-based #foodSupplements obtained by the Greek market. Results show the presence of #STX and #neoSTX in CB and water samples

6 #cyanoTC2018: Overall, the developed analytical methods were validated, providing acceptable recoveries, reproducibility and LODs for all #PSTs. Analysis of real biomass and water samples demonstrated method’s applicability as a sensitive tool for routine #PSTs determinations
