New preprint!🚨

Why do people express moral outrage online, but remain friendly in person? In a new preprint with Jay Van Bavel, PhD Tessa West we argue that moral expressions are highly malleable and shaped by social norms. (1/3)

📢New Preprint!📢
@JayVanBavel, Kareena del Rosario and I go inside the 'Funhouse Mirror Factory' of Social Media to explain how SM is distorting our perception of social norms-- by making moderate opinions practically invisible and over-representing the most extreme voices.

We have updated our pre-print on using GPT for text analysis.

Our most exciting new finding: GPT-4 Turbo (the updated GPT-4 model released this January) is even better than the prior version of GPT-4 at detecting psychological constructs in text:

Steve Rathje says GPT is much better at coding emotions (and other psych constructs) than LIWC or NRC!

And it works well across languages!

It was also able to detect moral foundations in Reddit conversations, but not as effective as a fine-tuned BERT classifier.

Key findings from : awkward encounters are spontaneous, sticky in memory, left unresolved, and result in significant perceptual differences such that participants feel worse about the interaction and their performance than they think their partners do Tessa West

Excited to present the findings from my pilot study with Tessa West on socially awkward encounters at SPSP! Stop by the emotions preconference on 2/8 to learn more about what differentiates perceptions of awkward encounters from those of similar processes.
