The best way I've found to talk about tech debt respectfully is to just say "smart people in a hurry made this" It's there because it solved a problem. It may be some of the most thoughtful, delicate engineering work you have. Don't insult it!

I’m floored by Fiona Coath’s talk about Surveillance Capitalism at #bbuzz - a great way to kick off a conference for people working on search, recommendations and big data processing

TIL: OpenSearch are implementing segment replication, so new data is just indexed once instead of on all replicas. This will be great for performance when querying and indexing at the same time! github.com/opensearch-pro…

This morning I rushed out of my hotel to attend the second conference day. On my way I called an old friend. She sounded surprised, but we had a good chat. When I arrived at the venue it dawned on me. It was 7 am and the conference wouldn’t start for another THREE HOURS 🤦‍♂️

Candidate: years of experience in highly relevant field, in-depth experience with 5+ programming languages, leadership experience, published papers, patents, etc. Recruiter: “I’m sorry we are looking for someone with Java experience” Hiring manager: 😨

Don't miss this update from Vespa - an excellent summary of new features added in June. I'm super excited about the new fuzzy query operator, contributed by Spotify Engineer. fast-rank support for mixed tensors (sparse + dense) is also super exciting.

It’s amazing how much of system architecture in a large company just boils down to “making it easy for engineers to do the right thing”. When faced with deadlines teams will always take the path of least resistance. So make that path lead to the architecture you want to have.

Couldn’t agree more. If you can make an architecture decision later with more information at no cost, leave it be and trust people to make the right call later

A few of us from Spotify Engineering just spent the last two days with Jo Kristian Bergum and others from vespa.ai. There are decades of experience building large scale search and recommendations systems distilled into Vespa. I’m really excited about what’s ahead 🥳

Too many people wait until they're exhausted or depressed to make change or seek help. Mental health isn't something to put on the back burner. We can't keep good habits in storage until we need them. Mental hygiene should be as ingrained in our daily routine as dental hygiene.

📢 I recommend you check out TeamOS, especially for Team Topologies adopters. It’s now open for sign-ups to their early access program. (Disclosure: I have invested in Outcome, the company building TeamOS) TeamOS.is

The most valuable voice in a meeting isn’t the person who talks the most. It’s the person who says the most with the fewest words. Dominating the discussion signals high self-importance or low self-awareness. Making space for others to contribute shows respect and earns respect.

Senior leadership: Why do the engineers always want to re-architect the systems? can't they evolve what we have? Also senior leadership: *proceeds to roll out another large re-org*
