"Everybody has that feeling when they look at a work of art and it's right, that sudden familiarity, a sort of...recognition, as though they were creating it themselves, as though it were being created through them while they look at it or listen to it..."

Currently packing up my apartment of four years in a rush, but I always have a moment for the book I probably think of most frequently. A gift 12 years ago from a dear friend, it will move with me for a seventh time next week.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (the loose-change state this box was shipped in), the courage to change the things I can (putting my kitchen implements drawer away), and the wisdom to know next time I should just pack the damn boxes myself 😇

once stopped for a turtle, some lady was honking at us like crazy from behind. she zoomed ahead and flattened it - got out of her car, saw what she’d done, saw us looking on, and dropped to her knees in the most performative show of despair. If I had mace, I’d’ve been tempted!

This is one of the most profound pieces of philosophy I’ve ever come across. The idea that our limitations are the very means through which we access the world is stunning. I need to start reading Merleau-Ponty soon.

Upon learning we’re new in town, the nice lady at the bike shop immediately asked “Oh, from Brooklyn?” She was technically wrong but spiritually, she read us to filth 🥲

creation occurs in fits and starts, it isn't a linear, seamless sequence, as AI would have it. It depends on gaps, rests, like music, moments of silence in which nothing can be made

In fourth grade I chose to read The Handmaid’s Tale for a book report. I gave it two stars - “boring; too religious.” Was struck by the concept of using butter as hand lotion. Completely missed the whole rape and social commentary thing bc, well, I was 8.
