long-term data collection, statistical modeling, and subject matter expertise reveals marine heatwave as the main driver in the historic Bering Sea snow crab collapse. Impressive and important work by a great team! science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

A recent report by Oceana paints a doom and gloom picture of stock status in UK waters. Here's the science: sustainablefisheries-uw.org/the-state-of-u…

Fishery sustainability depends on stock size and fishing pressure. Oceana used its own definitions, labeling some stocks as "critical" and "overfished." Dive into the facts to see the true status of UK stocks: 📊🐡 #FisheryManagement #Conservation sustainablefisheries-uw.org/the-state-of-u…

🎣 UK fish stocks were severely depleted, but regulations since the '90s have led to significant improvements. Since 2013, production has increased annually, and overall fish populations are at their highest levels since the 1960s. 📈 sustainablefisheries-uw.org/the-state-of-u…

Pros and cons of using drifting FADs in tuna fishing: Increased efficiency and lower costs on one side, but higher bycatch and environmental concerns on the other. Management is key. sustainablefisheries-uw.org/about-fish-agg…

Managing Drifting FADs: Pons et al. 2023 suggests that management solutions, rather than an outright ban, can address FAD-related issues. sustainablefisheries-uw.org/about-fish-agg…

Any discussion of fishery management should be viewed through a lens of management capacity. What is a governing body capable of? Science and enforcement both cost money… sustainablefisheries-uw.org/seafood-101/ma…

There we go again... I have no idea if the air-sea exchange model in this paper is accurate. But neither do the reviewers and editor given their lack of expertise in such models. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

I agree that bottom trawling and ploughing are not the same. Trawling disturbs a natural ecosystem but it remains in place although degraded, while ploughing/agriculture replaces the natural ecosystem with a food production system that bears no resemblance to the natural system.

I agreed to contribute to this informative video to counter the nonsense being reported about scampi. This is a well regulated and sustainable fishery that is improving all the time ... that's why it continues to produce consistent catches SWFPA SFF bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

What's the latest from #BristolBay? Through June 30, the total catch+escapement is at 7.1 million, and on track with expectations (blue line). Size-at-age of fish and Port Moller Test Fishery CPUE (grey bars=observed, red=expected) suggest a run ~15% above forecast

Bottom trawling is responsible for 26% of wild caught seafood. Sustainable Fisheries UW compares good vs. bad trawl management, evaluates the four main ways to assess bottom trawling impact and argues that not a ban but a transformation to good management is needed. sustainablefisheries-uw.org/bottom-trawlin…
