Day 2 of COP26 negotiations saw a lot of big and important commitments from the world leaders. Whilst these are fantastic, signing the pledge is the easy part. We've yet to see the strategies and action plans needed to achieve these transnational pledges, aka the hard part!

Today's #COP26 #Jargonbuster is #Article6: A central UN mechanism for trading carbon credits. The article outlines the international transfer of carbon credits between countries. For the rest of COP26 delegates will be negotiating Article 6 among other technical issues.

Today's #COP26 #jargonbuster is SLCPs (Short-Lived Climate Pollutants): "Powerful climate forcers that remain in the atmosphere for a much shorter period of time than CO2". The most important contributors are black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons.

Today's #COP26 #Jargonbuster is the #Kyotoprotocol, a voluntary transnational treaty signed by 192 countries in 1997. The commitments required the countries to mitigate CO2 emissions & significantly reduce GHG emissions. Due to lack of compliance, the treaty ceased in 2012.

We're back with #COP26 #Jargonbuster. Ratcheting refers to the requirement that countries will revise & communicate their emission targets (NDCs) every 5 years as part of the Paris Agreement. The question on all our minds during COP26, is 5 years too long for reviewing targets?
