Meet the Conehead Katydid. Named for it's cone shaped head but perhaps more interesting is the long sword like spine of the females that resembles a stinger but is actually an ovipositor that they use to lay fertilized eggs in plants. Their call sounds like buzzing powerlines.

It's almost that really special time of the year when our local forests are filled with this delicious native fruit, the PawPaw! Our naturally occurring mature grove at the Wildlife Center has a nice crop of fruit growing right but it's still weeks from being ripe enough to eat.

It's #NationalDogDay! While our pet dogs are seen as beloved members of our own families, their wild cousins, the coyote, wolves and even foxes are often feared, hated and thought of as a menace that must be exterminated. However, as you can see here, they aren't so different.

We are grateful to have been able to rescue this beautiful male Eastern Box Turtle off the road by the Wildlife Center, helping an oncoming vehicle that was seconds away from running it over to swerve around just in time, and then released where it was heading. #Everyturtlecounts

It's that time of the year when many of the turtle nests that were laid in the late spring will be hatching and those turtle hatchlings that don't overwinter in their nests can seem to start appearing out of nowhere while trying to make their way to safe habitat. Keep an eye out!

Since it's #NationalPawPawDay, here's more PawPaw! Part of what makes it special is not only that the fruit is unique and delicious, but it's not commercially available and it's only ripe for a short period of time in the late summer to early fall. Here is how we process it!

Have you ever heard of "possum apples" that fall from a "possumwood" tree? Well these are nicknames for fruit produced by the American Persimmon tree that are a favorite food of our only marsupial, the Virgina Opossum. The Persimmon is a native that provides delicious fall fruit!

We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween! This is the time of the year when everyone celebrates the weird and so-called scary creatures but most of these should be celebrated year round. When it comes to wildlife, the icons of Halloween, are some of our most beneficial.

While doing a wildlife survey we noticed something hiding in between two leaves, soaking up the warmth of the midday sun while remaining hidden from predators. This young Common Water Snake was doing a great job concealing itself so we returned its cover and left it undisturbed.
