June 9th 1982: General Mario Menendez is stung into action by the realisation that the war is still for the winning if only he tries, and he now puts together a number of plans to try to stack the odds in his favour. Some are better than others, but none are awful... 1/2

2) I should add that it's easy to judge him as a desk soldier but this really is him trying, remembering that back in Argentina, the Junta have largely abandoned him to his fate unless they see a real winner in his plans. So let's look at them...

June 9th 1982: First, General Menendez calls on the Argentine Air Force to bomb targets at Mount Kent and Estancia House... he receives the reply that they are unable to do so with the resources and manpower to hand, as other missions take priority: can't blame him for trying!

June 9th 1982: Next, Menendez consults with Major Aldo Rico, the head of 602 Commando, and authorises him to join with 601 Commando and the elite Gendarmes to set a trap and strike back at the British patrols tonight, especially in front of Two Sisters and Mount Harriet...

June 9th 1982: The head of the Helicopter Squadron, Major Pose Ortìz de Rosa, has authorised the withdrawal of the last two CH-47 Chinooks (H-91 & H 93) from Stanley to Río Grande. They depart full of Air Force officers and wounded men, to save them from capture... 1/2

2) However, Menendez orders them to return the Falklands with the newly formed 603 Commando Company and 10,000 rounds of hollow charge explosives requisitioned from a French petrochemical company, to operate in the British rear... good plan, but they never return.

June 9th 1982: General Menendez now pens somewhat ambitious and in honesty, unrealistic plans for a counter-attack by Argentine forces, to be read by the high-command in Buenos Aires. He states with prescience that the British will attack on June 12th... 1/2

2) His plan envisages the 5th & 8th Regiments crossing Falkland Sound and attacking Darwin and San Carlos, and he requests that the Argentine Air Force and Navy throw everything at it to obtain Air and Naval supremacy, long enough for him to move his forces to the west...

June 9th 1982: General Menendez now has every reason to feel confident: though the Argentine Air Force don't consider him a priority, he has plans for an ambush tonight in the mountains, special forces reinforcements and a major counter-attack on the British rear... 1/2

2) The Junta back home haven't been especially helpful thus far, particularly with coordinated air strikes, but now, he does receive some help from them, albeit in a rather underhanded way... 🙄

June 9th 1982: Argentine "Hospital Ship" ARA Bahia Paraiso arrived in Stanley by late morning, bringing tons of food and supplies and a little rather useful contraband too (watch the unfolding posts for more. No spoilers!!) This is a photo of her on the day... 1/2

2) Back in Argentina, the Red Cross Inspectors have been told that the crossing today is dangerous, and that their planned inspection in the Red Cross Box must happen tomorrow instead. Her Captain also blanks the log this day, to cover his tracks... keep watching 😉

2) Doctor Mario Lazar Vellico, the Argentine head of King Edward Memorial Hospital, visits the ship, only to find that they have brought all of the wrong blood supplies, but have contrabanded Exocet missiles, and he has a huge, blazing row with the crew... 2/3

3) Fred Clark, an Aerospace Engineer who had worked on Exocet, sneaks out after curfew and finds the two MM38 Exocet missiles in a shed. He is caught by a guard and challenged: the guard's thick gloves stop him pulling the trigger. Fred bribes him with a cigarette and leaves...
