Our love of gardening, and appreciation of blooms is evident every year we attend the Spelthorne in Bloom competition. The winners were announced last month. Amongst others The Three Horseshoes in Shepperton High Street won in Best Pub category, sponsored by Village Matters

It is 100 years since the 5th Earl of Lucan gifted the land where the Lucan Pavilion stands to the community of Laleham. His great grandson, the 8th Earl, visited Laleham last month to unveil a commemorative plaque. Read about it in #Shepperton Matters. villagematters.co.uk

Sunbury Court, overlooking the river at Sunbury on Thames, is a treasure trove of history. Currently the international conference centre for the Salvation Army, it has previously been a club and private homes. villagematters.co.uk

At the far side of the Littleton Rec in Shepperton Green, sits the modest home of a great little gem. The Academy Boxing Gym is run by volunteers and offers the chance for youngsters to get off the streets and off X Boxes and find an outlet for their energy.

We visited centenarian Bill Lucas last month. He has just celebrated his 100th birthday. He lived his whole life in a few hundred square yards in Shepperton Green, albeit with a stint overseas during WW2. Read about it in this months Shepperton Matters.

How about helping a child to learn to read? One in 4 children still struggle to read when they leave primary school. Bookmark Reading Charity aims to change that. They are looking for volunteers to help keep this work up. Read about it in this month’s magazines.

Autumn and winter is the time to prune and pollard trees to keep them healthy. Sadly this autumn we have faced the chopping of mature trees which have been deemed dangerous or diseased. We look at the strong affection we have for trees and how their loss affect us.
