Say what you want about Windows, but I went through my entire Ph.D. (6.5 years) without reinstalling Win10. I upgraded my CPU (twice!), Mobo, RAM, and SSD without ever re-installing the OS (even upgraded to Win11). You'd be hard-pressed to find that flexibility on any other OS.

Such a travesty that a venerated book for Systems practitioners (CSAPP, 3rd Ed) was mishandled by the publisher and the additional authors for the so-called "Global Edition." Tons of errors, forcing the authors to call it out on the website: csapp.cs.cmu.edu/3e/errata.html
