See below. My son's school evaluated him because they thought he had an "issue" with phonemic awareness. But they had not taught the kids phonemic awareness. At the time, I thought phonemic awareness was something kids were born with. I have sure learned a lot since then.

All the feels reading this one. 🄺 So much regret over what I didn’t know in the past, yet thankful that this will never (again?) happen to one of my students, or their parents and families. No teacher blame until we know better. Then, no excuses.

I love Wednesdays! Wednesdays are the days we pick up children at my neighborhood elementary school (the school Jamie went to in my book I Didn't Believe Him BEFORE NEST+m) and walk them over to my office for math and reading enrichment. So grateful to be a part of the happy

You are very influential and I beg you to please not minimize the fact that Calkins' curriculum did not teach phonics. That was, in fact, the Achilles heel for many children. How did the 5th graders at your South Bronx school all know how to decode? It couldn't possibly have been

"Over the past 6 months or so, I’ve been working on my own professional development goal of more conscious and explicit reading and writing instruction (I’m a high school English teacher). Currently, I’m reading The Writing Rope by Joan Sedita, which is extremely practical and

I would add: SLD, dyslexia, unsatisfactory reading skills, need for direct instruction and intervention for reading. Failure to take flight in reading leads to classroom behavior problems more than social or economic factors.

In a valuable post, Melanie Raymond recently likened the grief many of us feel over the incorrect teaching of reading to the stages of grief experienced after the death of a loved one. Below šŸ‘‡is an important message for all the teachers and parents grieving what they did not

Why have we, in public schools, not figured out a way to make certain EVERY child is reading on grade level before they go to middle school, (except those with learning disabilities and language learners)? We know enough to make this happen, we know front loading the costs is

Recently, The Principal’s Office asked a valuable question: "I’m not saying keep teenagers in elementary school, but why can’t they go to an intensive program before middle school if they still can’t read?" As a mom whose child suffered through not being taught how to read in school,

What holds many people back from taking initiative is not laziness. It's fear. Inaction breeds rumination and feeds anxiety. Action builds momentum and fuels confidence. Some ideas won't work. Some people will say no. But in the long run, it's better to fail than to fail to

"Let’s get reading done…and done right this year. Have your influencers help with that this time around"--PA state rep Jason Ortitay. Much to my surprise, I have become an influencer. My book, I Didn't Believe Him, has opened the eyes of many teachers and gotten schools to

Yes!šŸ‘‡ I believe first grade is the most important year in all of schooling. If a child learns to read in first grade, he is set to learn for the rest of his school career. If not, he already begins seeing himself as a struggling learner and begins tuning out to school. #teachers

I am currently volunteering in a third grade public school classroom in NYC where half the kids are reading at a K or 1st grade level. Becki Uccello Marilyn Muller U.S. Department of Education Linda McMahon Department of Government Efficiency Vivek Ramaswamy OMG. Every week, I walk out of that very well-intentioned school with my head spinning. Every week, I see teaching practices that I think can't be true. Most disheartening is that the teacher was told to focus on her "pushables"--the kids who have the potential to be "pushed" to
