How deep is a lake? In a new paper in ASLO's L&O we create and apply new models to estimate lake maximum and mean depth and volume for >475,000 US lakes. Some really interesting results! aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…

How does DOC influence profundal benthic invertebrate community composition in 148 Swedish lake sites? Composition changes most at low to moderate DOC concentrations < 10 mg/L. Read more in our newly published paper (Kevin C. Rose)…doi.org/10.1111/fwb.14…

Decreased water level led to dramatically worse water quality in a eutrophic reservoir In our new Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences paper, we show how changes in physical properties of the reservoir cascaded to affect chemistry and biology agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

Research by Cary’s Chris Solomon informed a recent decision by New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation and The Nature Conservancy to protect 14,600 acres in the Adirondacks. Solomon highlighted the vulnerability of Follensby Pond’s unique lake trout and provided a roadmap for sustainable management. caryinstitute.org/news-insights/…

Out of curiosity, I asked AI to generate an image representing lake deoxygenation. Seems to be accurate for the most extreme cases.

Interesting work that shows not only that longer seasonal stratification decreases deep water dissolved oxygen in lakes, but also that nutrient control may be an effective mitigation strategy. doi.org/10.1007/s13280…

Our new paper led by Kevin C. Rose makes the case that aquatic deoxygenation has sufficient implications for the Earth system that it warrants inclusion in the planetary boundaries framework. doi.org/10.1038/s41559…

Happy to announce a new paper in ASLO L&O with IBM Research and led by PhD student Mike Kelly. We discovered that oligotrophic lake HABs were preceded by a clear sequence of hydrodynamic events. This enables accurate forecasting for first time ever. aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Winter lake ice has declined over the past century, with implications for human safety, water quality, climate & weather patterns, global nutrient & water cycles, and freshwater species adapted to icy winters like the Baikal seal. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Our new paper is out in Environmental Science & Technology. Lake deoxygenation favors elevated tissue mercury and decreased selenium, altering the nutrient-toxin profile of a food fish. Read here: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac… Sebastian Heilpern Collin Eagles-Smith and others ACS Publications

In our new paper led by Yongqiang Zhou, data from 1156 Chinese rivers showed abrupt declines in dissolved oxygen during floods. Declines were more prevalent and stronger in urban and agricultural areas. Read more at Nature Communications: doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

Counterintuitive finding: in small lakes most vulnerable to low under-ice dissolved oxygen concentrations, shorter winter ice cover was associated with expansion of bottom-water hypoxia. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

New review on extreme and compound events in lakes led by Iestyn Woolway. Happy to have co-led the section on hypoxia with Joachim Jansen. doi.org/10.1038/s43017…
